Doing anything with seafood is incredibly time consuming. The preparation of what you’re cooking (whether it be fish, prawns, mussels or crabs) plays a big part in the outcome of the dish.

I’ve recently been on the lookout for stellar seafood stew recipes and even though I’ve come across quite a few than look appetizing, none quite hit the spot like this recipe for Cioppino, a play on Italian and Mediterranean fish stews that use halibut, shrimp and mussels to deliver a comforting yet complex blend of flavors that will not only leave you impressed, but also feeling nourished — a healthy addition to any recipe repertoire.

Cioppino is a dish created by Italian-American immigrants based in San Francisco. Using classic flavors found in Mediterranean seafood dishes with locally-sourced seafood is what makes this dish a winner. The different textures from the variety of seafood used — halibut, clams, mussels, and shrimps — creates a surprise in each bite… a sort of little sister dish to the celebrated ‘Feast of the Seven Fishes’, a traditional Italian-American Christmas Eve seafood dish served on Christmas Eve to celebrate the arrival of Christ by abstaining from meat.
